Funeral Kaikaryam
Funeral Kaikaryam is a set of Hindu rituals performed after the death of a person to honor their soul and ensure a peaceful transition to the afterlife. The word Kaikaryam refers to the services or duties performed by the family and loved ones for the deceased. The process begins with bathing the body and preparing it for cremation, followed by performing rituals like Antyesti (final rites) and Shraddha (offerings to ancestors). Family members, especially the eldest son or close relatives, take part in carrying out the rites, which include lighting the funeral pyre and offering prayers and offerings for the deceased's peace and liberation.
After the cremation, the family performs Pinda Daan (offering rice balls) and Tarpanam (water offerings) to seek blessings for the deceased’s soul. The ceremony continues with various purification rituals, marking the conclusion of mourning and ensuring the soul’s peaceful journey to the afterlife. Funeral Kaikaryam is an essential duty to honor and care for the departed.
